Houdini had about 7-9 bad years in showbusiness. Working the worst kind of work for a magician. Dime Museums, which were nothing more that glorified freak shows, small circuses, Medicine Shows, Beer Halls, etc. It was in a beer hall that Beck first saw Houdini. He had heard about the publicity Houdini was getting from challenging the police and decided to see what was going on. This was the era of vaudeville fastest growth and he needed good acts. He brought along a pair of handcuffs with which he challenged Houdini. No problem for Houdini. He offered Houdini a contract and placed him in his chain of Orpheum Theaters. Since Houdini was a gruff, rough and tumble type of performer, he was perfect for Beck's circuit the went from Chicago to California. He stated Houdini at $60.00 a week, quickly gave him a raise to $90.00 and week and Houdidi did so well that he asked for another raise and got $125.00 a week. Not bad in an eaa where steak was $.05 cents a pound.

Martin Beck also handled Sarah Bernhardt, built the Martin Beck Theater in New York City, that to this day houses Broadway shows, and also built the legendary Palace Theater in New York that was the meca for all show business. He had to sell the Palace to the Albee family as they did not like him moving in on their turf. When Houdini went to England, he was supposed to have several bookings arranged by Beck, but they fell through. Houdini was furious with Beck over this.
