Houdini was working with his brother Theodore Weiss, known as Theo or Dash in an act called the Houdini Brothers in June of 1894 on the midway in Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York City. Houdini would eventually create a carreer for his brother as a competing escape artist under the name of "Hardeen". It was at Coney Island the he met his life long love. She was part of a dance team called the Floral Sisters.. Depending on who told the story their meeting occured in three different way. Theo said he met and dated her first, and upon meeting her Harry was instantly smitten. She told the story of meeting him at a birthday party show he was doing and he stained her dress with a trick he was doing. Houdini said they met on a streetcar where he dropped his props and she helped to pick them up and hence was stained by so liquid in all the props. She was on the way to the same birthday party. At any rate both agreed the Houdini mom then made her a new dress. Houdini biographer Milbourne Christoper, who does his research well, says it was probably Theo's story that was most likely closest to the truth. They were married just two weeks later, though no records of the actual marriage have ever been seen or located, even to this day.

Bess and Houdini would later visit with the family that helped Houdini on the road when he left home at 12 years of age to seek his "fortune" to help out his destitue family. Houdini never forgot those who helped him.
